Turn photo into Painting By Numbers

You don’t need to be an artist to hang your favourite photo on the wall as a painting you made yourself. When you turn a photo into paint by numbers, all the complexity of painting is reduced to a simple series of numbered instructions — match a number to a colour, fill in the shape, and a picture of the people, pets and places you love appears under your own brush. Here’s exactly how it works, and how we make sure it actually looks like your photo.

Why turn a photo into a painting

A photo on your phone is one of thousands. A photo you’ve painted by hand, framed and hung on the wall is something else entirely. That’s the whole reason this exists: your memory, on your wall. But beyond the finished keepsake, the act of painting one does a surprising amount of good.

  • It builds confidence. The biggest barrier to painting is the blank canvas — the fear that you’ll get it wrong. Paint by numbers removes that fear completely, because the plan is already made. After a couple of kits you’ll feel confident enough to try a blank canvas of your own.
  • It makes deeply personal gifts. Anyone can buy a frame. A canvas painted from a photo of someone’s dog, their wedding day or their childhood home is a gift that can’t be bought off a shelf.
  • It brings family together. A big canvas spread across a table is an easy, screen-free thing to do side by side — parents and kids taking turns on a quiet evening, everyone adding a few strokes.
  • It’s genuinely relaxing. The focused, repetitive rhythm of filling one small region after another is quietly therapeutic — a pocket of calm at the end of a busy day.
  • It’s good for children. Matching numbers to colours and staying inside the lines gently builds concentration, patience and fine motor control, all while making something they’re proud of.
All the complexity of painting is reduced to a simple series of numbered instructions — so the only thing left to do is the calm, satisfying part.

How the photo-to-canvas process works

Plenty of sites will take your photo and run it through a one-click filter, then ship whatever comes out. That’s exactly why so many custom canvases come back looking nothing like the photo. We do it differently, and the difference all happens before we print:

  1. You upload a good photo. Add your size, colour detail and frame to the cart, then upload your photo at checkout — or reply to your order email with the image attached.
  2. A real designer converts it. Not a filter. A person tunes the detail so faces, fur and fine areas read clearly on a numbered canvas.
  3. You get a digital proof. We email you a numbered preview of your design, usually within 1–3 days.
  4. You request free revisions. Not quite right? Ask for changes. We revise it — free — until you’re happy.
  5. We print only once you approve. Nothing goes to print until you say yes. And if the finished canvas still doesn’t resemble your photo, we re-do it free.

This is the heart of our custom paint by numbers kit — and the reason we can promise it’ll look like the person, pet or place you love. Want to watch the whole thing first? Our how it works page walks through it step by step.

Choosing a good photo

The single biggest factor in a great result is the photo you start with. A brilliant designer can only work with what the picture gives them, so a few minutes choosing the right image pays off enormously. Look for:

  • Good lighting. Natural, even light is best. Avoid dark, murky shots and harsh shadows across a face.
  • Sharp focus. A crisp, in-focus photo gives us clean detail to work with. Blurry photos stay blurry.
  • A subject that fills the frame. The face, pet or object should take up most of the picture. Tiny, far-away subjects lose all their detail when scaled to a canvas.
  • Five people or fewer. Groups work beautifully, but the more faces you pack in, the smaller each one becomes. Keep it to five or fewer for the best likeness.
  • Close-ups for faces. For a portrait, a close, head-and-shoulders shot beats a full-body photo every time — it gives the face room to look like itself.

We’ve put every tip we know into one place — read our custom photo tips before you upload for the sharpest possible result. Not sure your photo is up to it? Email it over and we’ll give you an honest opinion before you spend a penny.

Colour detail: 24, 36 or 48

Here’s the part almost nobody explains: a face is made of skin tones, soft shadows and highlights, and it needs enough colours to render all of them. Too few, and the face collapses into flat blocks that don’t look like anyone. That’s why we make colour detail a real choice on our personalized paint by numbers kits:

Detail levelColoursBest for
StandardUp to 24Simple subjects — landscapes, single objects, pets with bold markings
More DetailUp to 36One or two people, detailed pets, richer backgrounds
PremiumUp to 48Close-up faces, group photos, weddings — anything where likeness matters most

Our honest rule of thumb: faces need 48 colours to look like themselves. If you order a lower level and your photo would look better with more detail, we’ll flag it during proofing — no pressure, just a heads-up so you’re not disappointed.

Why we proof first. The number one complaint about custom canvases everywhere else is “it doesn’t look like the photo.” Our whole process is built to kill that problem: a real designer, a proof you approve, free revisions, and a re-do guarantee if it still misses. You are never handing over a photo and hoping.

The proof — your safety net

If you take one thing from this guide, take this: you will see your design before we print it. The digital proof is your safety net. It’s your chance to say “her eyes aren’t quite right” or “can we brighten the background,” and for us to fix it — for free — before a drop of ink touches the canvas. When you approve, you already know exactly what you’re getting. And in the rare case the finished piece doesn’t resemble your photo, we re-do it at no cost. That’s how confident we are in the process, and how much we care that it’s right.

Getting started

Your kit arrives with everything you need: your custom numbered linen canvas, pre-mixed acrylic paints (24, 36 or up to 48 pots to match your detail level), three brushes — fine, medium and broad — a reference sheet, and our free-paint-for-life promise, so a nearly-empty pot never stalls your project. Custom kits are made to order, so we add 2–4 days of make time, then ship tracked worldwide with the cost and delivery window shown at checkout — around US 10–16 business days and 12–20 business days worldwide.

Curious what other people’s finished canvases look like? Take a look at our customers’ samples, and read up on the wider benefits of custom paint by numbers. Then pick a photo you love — the first brushstroke is the hardest part, and it’s a lot easier than you think.
